Greeting Party

It’s day 7 into a 28-day, 7,800 mile self-guided expedition to the top of contiguous North America and back as we continue to push north to the Arctic Ocean. It’s after 10pm, we’re 250 miles away from the next sign of civilization, and a late winter snow storm is rolling in. My friend and I are unsure where we’re going to set up camp for the night along the famous Dempster Highway, when suddenly out of the corner of my eye I spot some color amongst the darkening snow. As I carefully slowed the vehicle, I radioed back to my friend that we were going to stop for a moment to confirm if I really did see what I thought I saw. It was; this was our host for the next 45 minutes. It was at that moment I realized we had arrived…we were just a few miles from crossing the Arctic Circle. It was here we spent time with this remarkable creature, one who was welcoming us to this enchanted land. Even though the snow kept coming down, and my travel partner and I still had no idea where we’d make camp for the night before the storm became too much to navigate through, time stood still for that period while this fox and I exchanged glances and communicated with one another in that non-verbal way. Sure, he’d take a pause to look around, maybe hunt a little, but he kept stopping as if to acknowledge us and to grant us passage into his world.

This expedition was 9-months in the making and a month to complete. My friend and I drove from our respective homes on this journey to visit and drive on the Arctic Ocean. It was an unforgettable experience, but I’ll always remember our Arctic host and his warm welcome.
